Pride Month

June is Pride month for members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community and their allies. Pride began as a way to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots that occurred in New York City and is widely recognized as the start of the Gay Liberation Movement.  Since 1969, major cities across the country celebrate Pride and equality with demonstrations, parties, and parades.

Safe+Sound Somerset to acknowledges the disproportionate amount of violence and abuse experienced in the LGBTQ community compared to same sex couples. LGBTQ abuse victims face unique control tactics such as threats of “outing” them to family members or employers, threats that police will not believe domestic abuse in a same-sex couple relationship, and abusers using their privileged ability to “pass” as straight or as a cisgender. Members of the LGBTQ community inherently face more barriers to accessing safe, appropriate resources such as shelter and medical care. We acknowledge not only the challenges faced by this population, but also their strength and resilience to overcome. Safe+Sound Somerset celebrates being a proud ally to the LGBTQ community and wishes to support all victims so that no one lives a life of abuse. Happy Pride!
